lower click-through rate for the #1 Google result once an AI-written answer appears above it — the same shift now playing out on ChatGPT and Claude. Ahrefs (Ryan Law), 2026

A different search engine, not a Google feature

ChatGPT, OpenAI's other surfaces, and Claude are increasingly where people start a search, not just where they end up after Google. None of them are Google, none of them use Google's index, and none of them are moved by the work that gets you ranked there. Treating them as a footnote to SEO means being invisible on all three.

Google's own AI Overviews are useful as evidence of the shift — it's the one place hard numbers exist, cited below — but they're a Google feature, and Google is already SEO's job. AEO is the separate work of being found and quoted on the search engines that aren't Google.

AI models don't reward pages the way Google does

Traditional SEO rewards depth, backlinks, and matching a query's exact wording. ChatGPT and Claude reward something closer to "can I lift this paragraph out and put it in front of someone verbatim": a direct answer near the top, clearly attributed facts, clean structure, and a page their crawlers can actually read.

They don't even agree with each other on that. Each platform pulls from a different mix of sources and weighs how recent a page is differently — which is also why "ranking well in one" says very little about the others, and why this gets tracked and built for per platform rather than once and assumed.

Most sites are written for a reader who's already committed to scrolling. AEO means writing the direct answer first and the elaboration after, so there's something extractable at all.

Run alongside SEO, not folded into it

Some groundwork is shared: clean headings, structured data, and genuine depth already help both. Past that, AEO is its own project with its own targets — confirming OpenAI's and Anthropic's crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) can actually reach your pages, restructuring key content into direct-answer form, and tracking whether ChatGPT and Claude are actually citing you, which no Google-facing tool shows you.

If you're already a client for web design or SEO, this sits on the same foundation rather than starting over — but it's billed and tracked as its own thing, because it targets engines SEO was never built to reach.

How AEO actually works

Four things, done in order — each one is the thing that breaks silently if it's skipped.

01

Confirm the crawlers can even reach you

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and the others aren't Googlebot — a robots.txt rule written years ago, or a page that only renders after client-side JS, can block them silently while Google indexes the same page fine.

02

Restructure for the answer, not the scroll

The fact a model would quote goes in the first sentence, not the fourth paragraph. Most existing pages are written for a reader who's already committed to scrolling — nothing sits at the top that's extractable on its own.

03

Mark up what's a fact, not just what's a page

FAQ and structured data give a model something machine-parseable to lift out, the same way schema already helps Google — except here, it's often the difference between citable and invisible.

04

Track citations the only way that exists

No Search Console equivalent exists for ChatGPT or Claude. The real questions your customers would ask get run on a schedule, and whether and how you're cited gets logged by hand.

Some groundwork carries over both ways — clean structure and genuine depth help either engine notice you. Neither one's ranking algorithm reads the other's mind.

What's included

  • AI crawler accessibility audit (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and others)
  • Direct-answer content structure: the answer first, the explanation after
  • FAQ and structured-data markup written for machine extraction
  • Entity and brand-fact consistency across the sources AI models draw from
  • Citation tracking across ChatGPT, OpenAI's other surfaces, and Claude
  • Existing pages restructured for extractability, not rewritten from scratch
  • Ongoing monitoring as these platforms change what they cite

Frequently asked questions

Yes — different search engines, not a variant of the same one. SEO is Google: ranking in its index, its map pack, its AI Overviews. AEO is ChatGPT, OpenAI, and Claude: being the source they quote or paraphrase in an answer. The underlying groundwork overlaps (structure, clarity, technical access), but ranking #1 on Google has never once gotten anyone cited on ChatGPT.

There's no Search Console equivalent for either, so it's tracked directly: running the questions your customers would actually ask through ChatGPT and Claude on a schedule, and logging whether and how you're cited. Slower than a dashboard, but it's the only method that's actually true right now.

It's additive, not a replacement. Most of the technical and content foundation SEO already builds carries over directly; AEO adds the AI-crawler access checks, direct-answer restructuring, and citation tracking on top of it.
